Multimodal transportation from Dubai to Kazakhstan via China

April 21, 2025

This project involved the transport of lubricating oil from a factory in Dubai, through sea routes to Lianyungang in China, and then by rail to its final destination in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Managed by the Xi’an branch of Focus Global Logistics, this operation underscores the strategic importance of its establishment aimed at facilitating seamless multimodal transportation from West Asia through China to Central Asia and beyond to Europe.

Case background:

The journey commenced with the collection of cargo from the Dubai factory, followed by shipping from Jebel Ali Port to Lianyungang. Awaiting clearance for cross-border transportation, the two 40HQ containers stayed in Lianyungang for five days before continuing the journey by rail. The entire process was executed under the EXW (Ex Works) term, ensuring efficiency and minimizing the risks associated with unloading and reloading the cargo, namely lubricating oil prone to leakage.

Transportation: Combined transport by rail and sea

Term: EXW

POL: Jebel Ali, Dubai

POD: Almaty, Kazakhstan

Container: 40HQ*2

Commodity: lubricating oil

T/T: 35 days

Time:  2025/03

Advantages:

1. The whole process used the same containers from the origin to the destination to reduce the risk of unloading cargo.

2. Free of charge: the container usage period

Challenges:

1. The cargo was lubricating oil, which was prone to leakage. Based on the cargo information provided by the customer, our Xi’an branch immediately developed a professional railway packing plan for the customer.

2. Overcoming the time difference, we worked smoothly with the Dubai agent and shipped the cargo according to the original schedule.

One of the standout advantages of this multimodal solution is the use of the same containers throughout the journey from origin to destination, significantly reducing the risk of damage or loss. Moreover, the container usage period came at no extra charge, adding to the cost-effectiveness of the operation. However, challenges such as the sensitive nature of the cargo required immediate action, leading the Xi’an branch to devise a specialized railway packing plan. Overcoming logistical hurdles like time differences, the team collaborated smoothly with the Dubai agent to ensure the shipment proceeded as scheduled.

This successful venture not only highlights the growing capabilities of multimodal transportation but also sets a precedent for future international logistics projects, demonstrating efficient coordination across diverse geographical and operational landscapes. With continuous advancements and strategic planning, the potential for expanding trade routes and enhancing global connectivity appears more promising than ever
